Ballroom II
Every day I wake surrounded
by my past lovers standing like a choir
of silent angels over me.
Statues in a garden.
Beneath their stares
I get dressed
and through the hours of the day
keep them close,
like a pair of brass knuckles,
stretching my fingers through the holes
cold around my skin,
like the gloves of a knight,
chainmail
pulled up to the elbow to keep me
from touching anything.
Every night I still find myself
holding such heaviness around my fists
unable to unclench the fingers
walking into the lake
its waters coming over my shoulders.
